The historical town of Figeac in the Lot region of France is famous for its old merchants' houses with roof terraces.

The historical town of Figeac in the Lot region of France is the birthplace of Jean-François Champollion, the first translator of Egyptian hieroglyphics. In the Middle ages the town was a centre of trade with its wealthy merchants operating throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. These merchants built many great houses of the local fine-grained sandstone. These houses often carried terraces on the upper floors to make the most of the cool evening breezes.
