. The Exempt firemen of San Francisco; their unique and gallant record. inmusical annals that had occurred up tothat time on this Coast. All the theat-rical celebrities of that day Mr. Anthonyremembers well. He laughs as he tellsthe story of how the old firemen induceda number of Russian sailors of a Russianman-of-war then in port to come ashoreand help subdue the fire then raging in ablock of buildings in the city on Sacra-mento street from Drumm to the the excitement occasioned by battlingwith the fiery element the sailors allowedtheir time of leave to expire, and the cit-izens took care of them for the Russian admiral sent a peremptorydemand for the immediate return of the sailors, and word was sent back to himthat the firemen had taken them intocustody for the night. Thereupon hethreatened to bombard the city. TheMayor, becoming alarmed at the unex-pected turn of events, urged the firemento send the sailors back to their ship, and the shellbacks were accordinglyallowed to return. Mr. Anthony highlyprizes an old scrap book he has in his. EDWARD T. ANTHONY possession, which contains a varied col-lection of clippings from old newspapersof events in which the firemen were in-terested. The companies indulged infrequent high jinks, and appear to havegot all they could out of the enjoymentsof life. Death has thinned the ranks ofthe gallant band of men who in their daydid so much to win renown for their com-pany. And Mr. Anthony looks forwardwith the most pleasurable anticipationsto a reunion of the surviving members ofthe old Knickerbocker No. 5 in Octobernext to commemorate the jubilee of the 92 SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN foundation of their company. Such agathering will be unique. The spirit offifty years ago will breathe and liveagain for the time being, and fond memo-ries of other days will be revived. Mr. Anthony is justly proud of his twosons, who are worthy chips of the oldblock, and are members of the Sons ofExempt Firemens Association. His son, Hube
