Thomas Linacre. Portrait of the English physician and humanist Thomas Linacre (1460-1524). In 1518 he became the founder president of the Royal college of Physicians. Linacre was educated in classics at Oxford University and later gained a medical doctorate from Padua University in Italy. On returning to England he served as the King's physician to Henry VII and later to Henry VIII. He also became Mary Tudor's (Mary I) tutor. Linacre is also famous for translating many of Galen's medical works into Latin. In 1962 Oxford University, England, named a new college (Linacre College) in his honour.
