Adams), andby A. S. Allen. The first stage-coach to Providence, advertisedJuly 20, 1767, by Thomas Sabin, put up at the sign of the Lamb. The White Horse Tavern was a few rods south of the Lamb,situated nearly opposite the mansion-house of Dr. Lemuel Hay-ward, physician and surgeon, from whose estate Hayward Place. FKOM CHUECH GREEN TO LIBERTY TREE. 393 is named. It had a large square sign projecting over the foot-way, on which was delineated a white charger. We find thistavern mentioned in 1794, and infer that it was the rendezvousof one of the companies of the Boston Eegiment, as youngWoodbridge came here for his sword before meeting Phillips onthe Common. It was kept by Joseph Morton, father of PerezMorton, in 1760, and for a long time thereafter. In 1787Israel Hatch became mine host; we append his advertisemententire : — TAKE NOTICE !
