This image may not be used to state or imply NOAO endorsement of any company or product Sun halo. Halo of light around the Sun (behind the palm tree), caused by refraction of sunlight by ice crystals high up in the air. The light is most commonly refracted at an angle of 22 degrees, creating a ring that is 44 degrees in diameter (its angular size on the sky). This sun halo was photographed on 27 June 2006, near the offices of the National Solar Observatory, in Tucson, Arizona, USA.
