In clear water sometimes a dozen ormore of Perch have been observed in a deep^hole sheltered by trees or bushes; by usingfine tackle and a well-scoured worm, the an-gler see them strive which shall firstseize it, until the v>hole shoal have beencaught. The Perch may be angled for andtaken until the end of September, but thepreferable season is from the beginning ofMay to the middle of July. 43. GraijUny. The Grayling is generally found in clearand quick streams with clayey bottoms. Itspawns in Aprils and sometimes as late as themiddle of May. The most approved baits forGrayling are lob-worms, gentles, flag-worms,wasp-grubs, cow-dung bobs, cadis-worms,marsh-worms, and brandlings. It may befished for at all seasons of the year, particu-larly in cool cloudy weather. There is notany method more killing for large Grayling,than applying the grasshopper to the point ofa leaded hook, the lead and shank of whichare covered with green and yellow silk, toimitate the body of the insect. In the win-ter Grayling rise for an hour or two in warmweather, and at this tiine the smallest imita-tion of black or pale gnats on the smallestsized hook, succeed best in taking them.
