Water wheel. Water from a river is currently flowing to the right of the water wheel, but when diverted to flow down the left-hand channel, it will turn the water wheel. This wheel has slats designed to be pushed by the water. This will in turn (via the shaft at left) operate a pump or drive a mill's grindstone. In this way, the energy of the flowing water is harnessed. This water wheel dates from the 12th century. Photographed in Braine-le-Chateau, Belgium, in 2009.
