SIMSLIN testing. The Safety in Mines Scattered Light Instrument (SIMSLIN) was invented in 1971. SIMSLIN detects levels of light scattering to measure levels of airborne dust in industrial environments such as mines and factories. It was developed as part of research carried out by what is today the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL).
