The shell is strong, somewhat angu- lar, white, and about an inch in length, though itsometimes grows larger. I have occasionally foundlive specimens at Monterey. There are three species of Saxidomi which live inthe sand and gravel along the seacoast, from BritishColumbia to Mexico. They resemble one another inform and habits. The beaks are placed far forward, and behind them is the large external ligament. The first species is named Saxidomns aratus, Gld.,ra-tus. The general shape of the 184 SAXIDOMUS. shell is oval, and it is quite full and strong. Thepallial sinus is very deep, and the shell is white, withsome brown markings around the hinge-area. Radiallines are very faint, but lines of growth are fine, regular and strong. The hinge-teeth are very dis-tinct, indicating a strong, powerful shell. Its lengthis from two to several Saxidomns Nuttallii, Conr., Nut-tall-i-i, Fig. shell of this species is strong and heavy, and ismarked by numerous rough, irregular, concentricridges. The interior of the shell is white, and thethickened portion below the huge external ligamentis translucent like agate. The pallial sinus is verydeep, and the posterior end of the shell is slightlygaping. Color brownish white, length four inches THE CARPET SHELL. I85 or less. The engraving shows a reduced figure ofone of these fine shells. Saxidomics squalidus, Desh., squal-i-dus, is con-sidered by some as a variety of the last species. It isfound off the coast of Oregon, and is sold in the mar-kets of Portland. It is smaller than Niittallii, andhas a smoother shell; in other respects it is very sim-ilar. Length nearly three inches, height two inches, and breadth an inch and a half. Tape
