In this photograph, taken on November 14, 1918, at the Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine in Bruceton, Pennsylvania, investigations are being conducted on coal dust bombs. The Bureau of Mines, led by Chief Mining Engineer George S. Rice, is experimenting with the effects of dust clouds and explosions caused by coal dust placed in these bombs. The image captures a flame cloud being caused by a pipe, which was exploded and ignited by nine ounces of black powder dust in a glass tube.
