On the 16th of April, 1861,he resigned his commission in the Uni-ted States Army and tendered his services to the Southern Con-federacy and was ordered to report to General Magruder inthe peninsula, below Richmond, with a Captains was soon promoted to the rank of Major, and on the 30thof September, 1861, was made Colonel and placed in commandof the Fourth Texas Regiment of Infantry.
