Multipleplacenta as a class are saidto occur in one labor out ofabout 352 (Ribemont-Des-saignes). The most commontype of multiple placenta isthe placenta duplex, or bi-lobed placenta, which wasencountered by Ahlfeld 5times in- 3000 cases ( to 251). These ano-malies may cause seriouscomplications of the thirdstage of labor. The practi-tioner should always ex-amine a placenta carefullyto make sure that there is noapparent loss of substance. (4) Anomalies of Re-lation.—By this term ismeant the anomalous rela-tions which may exist between the placenta and the other fetal appendages(membranes, cord). Battledore Placenta: This term is applied to a placenta in. Fig. 262.—Placenta Succenturiata.—{Authors case.) Placenta Marginata; Placenta Circumvallata: When thechorion lasve begins within insteadof at the border of the placenta thelatter necessarily exhibits a freemargin and is known as a pla-centa marginata. When thechorion forms a rigid annular foldat the inner limit of the margin,we have a so-called placenta cir-cumvallata. These conditions havetheir inception before the placentahas arrived at its normal super-ficial growth. The outermost villipenetrate into the substance of thedecidua vera, so that the latter issplit, its upper segment becominga part of the refiexa. Through some inflammatory process in the latter with resulting fibroid induration, the lateral expansion of the placenta is accomplished in
