The Clyde-type long cairn is situated on a terrace on a steep hillside around 415ft OD above a tributary of the Monamore Glen (NS 0175 2889). The burial chamber is divided into three compartments at the SW end of the cairn, the entrance & facade face uphill. The cairn has been robbed of stone & is overgrown. Excavations in 1961 by the late Euan MacKie uncovered an impressive facade of 8 uprights (including the portals) linked by drystone walling. He also found 21 spreads of charcoal & other signs of ritual fires & feasting in the forecourt, possibly connected with a cult of the dead. C14 dates from charcoal at different levels suggest the cairn may have been in use for up to 1000 years: built in the 4th millennium BC, the entrance, facade & forecourt deliberately blocked & filled in with earth & stones in the 3rd millennium BC. The cairn is also known as Meallach's Grave. The forestry has matured & been felled since this photo was taken in 1978.
