This 1891 illustration shows the Tiber River and the Palace of the Caesars at top left on the Palatine Hill. During the Roman Empire (27 - 476), emperors built their grand homes on the hill. The first Caesar to rule Rom was Julius Caesar, who took control after crossing the Rubicon in 49 He was assassinated in 44 His nephew Octavius (later Augustus) was the first emperor. Domitian ( 81-96) was the last of the Caesars. Rome does appear extremely grand in this illustration.
