The report, extractsfrom which are given below, was submitted on Sept. 26. The total length of aqueduct from the McPhillips Streetreservoir to Shoal Lake is about miles. The reportdeals only with 86 miles of line the greater portion ofwhich is of the flow line, cut and cover type. Thestandard depth of cover specified for the Shoal LakeAqueduct is 4 ft. above the top of the arch. The mini-mum top width of the embankment is 8 ft. with side slopesof 1^4 to 1. The relative proportions of cut and embank-ment vary somewhat from point to point with minor ir-regularities in the surface, but the line has been so lo-cated that for mileg at a stretch the surface slope is so. ^nside wiih of AquedjctMinium S-O2SMGD L -^^^::iJ0M6a l ^^J;^^Original /y^ ^VV ^^^f^c^ Fig. 1—Aqueduct Section. uniform that the aqueduct practically parallels the sur-face without a break in grade. Between Mile 88 andMile 96, where the line crosses the height of land westof Shoal Lake, the aqueduct is continuously in deep cutof from 12 to 22 ft., but here the upper part of the trenchwill not be refilled, so that the depth of cover will, ingeneral, be restricted to four feet as in other portions ofthe line. Figure 1 represents the particular section used at Mile23, where the principal defects have occurred. The slopeat this point is ft. per 1,000, or ft. per mile. Thesize is 8 ft. 9 in. x 7 ft. 4% in. It is what is known asthe standard section for cut and cover work in com-pact earth. The aqueduct is built of 1:2:4 concrete of first classmaterials carefully selected and graded to form a strongand dense mixture. The invert is laid in alternate l
