He is not allowed to add the friendly balls numberto his score. It will be seen that lawn pool is in many respects verymuch like croquet, the principal points of difference beingthat stakes are the objects of the aim instead of hoops, andthat the winning side is that which has scored the largestnumber in the game, and not the side that has gone all theway around the course soonest. 696 HARPERS YOUNG PEOPLE. VOLUME IV. &^;*~^835^**. A GAME OF LAWN TOOL. When a ball has gone all the way around, striking- allthe stakes in proper order except the finishing stake, itbecomes a king ball, and enjoys all the privileges thata rover has in croquet. At the same time, there arecertain penalties attaching to this otherwise independentball. A king ball plays in his regular turn; he may helphis friends or harass his enemies, but he must not strike astake, otherwise he loses the number of the ball on thatstake. To make up for this, however, he is allowed toadd to his score the number of any ball that he may hit, whether friend or foe. Thus the king ball can make him-self very useful to his friends and very annoying to hisopponents. When all the balls on both sides are kingballs, or have hit the final stake, the side having the largestscore is declared the winner. The proper number of players is four oil each side, butas few as one on each side may play : in this case eachplayer should vise two balls. A game
