Now in his fifth year of service, Quintana started his journey sailing around the world on the training ship La Esmeralda. The four masts ship is the second longest and second tallest in the world. “Once while sailing across the Atlantic we where going 30-40 knots on the sails alone before switching to engine power,” Quintana said proudly. “ I had to climb the mast during a storm to stow the sails.” Quintana says he likes working with the lines of the ship and never thought he would grow up to drive a ship. He said being underway makes him feel relaxed and that the tranquility gives him time to think about family and friends. He also enjoys the challenge of steering though storms. Quintana now serves aboard the Chilean Navy frigate CNS Almirante Cochrane (FF 05), and finds himself for the first time in Hawaii at Exercise Rim of the Pacific. Twenty-six nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 30 to Aug. 4, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that began in 1971. ( Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Antonio Turretto Ramos)
