Vertical blue bands ice-berg, against Andean snows backdop, Lake Argentino ice-field in front of the Upsala Glacier, Patagonia
The Upsala Glacier, named after Upsala University, who sponsored the first geological studies in the area, lies at the northern end of Brazo Upsala, the northern arm of Lake Argentino, in the Patagonian Andes. It is the largest glacier in Los Glaciares National Park, having a width of 5-7 km, terminus 60 m high and length of 60 km, making it the longest glacier in South America. Since 2008, however, as a result of rapid retreat of the terminus, access to the ice front has been blocked by ice-bergs, many of which are marbled with streaks of muddy grey sediment and strips of blue ice. The glacier, one of 47 in Los Glaciares National Park (created in 1937 and made a UNESCO World heritage Site in 1981), is reached by catamarans touring from Puerto Bandera, 45 km west of El Calafate, along the northern arm of Lake Argentino, the largest lake in Argentina.
