Avalanche fences, Austrian Alps. Avalanche fences (centre) on the Erzbergspitze (2536 metres), a mountain near Stuben, Arlberg Pass, Austria. The fences help to reduce the chances of large masses of loose snow detaching from the slope. They can also slow any avalanches that do occur. By breaking up the slope, they can prevent a small avalanche from triggering a larger avalanche. Photographed in August 2013.
