Volunteers including many gap year students from the UK spend time working in Guatemala for a charity called ‘From Houses to Homes’, which builds small but sturdy homes for some of that countries poorest families. The homes which the new buildings replace are often constructed using cornstalk and cardboard for walls over a dirt floor. Damp and unhygienic those hovels are impossible to keep clean – the buildings which the charity provides are secure, watertight and built on real foundations.
