The channel at this point is about 39 from the normal surface of the ground, downto grade, and as the cut passes through more orless soft material, water collects in the channel and ENGINEERINGAND CONTRACTING ing downward. Each suction is equipped with a Barcojoint so that in case the barge settles onto the bottom ofthe canal, either by sinking or pumping out the water, nodamage will be caused to the pumps by breaking of suc-tion pipes, as would be the case if the connection weresolid. Each suction pipe is handled by a small windlasslocated on top of the plant in a framework. The discharge of the two units is brought together intoa common 12-in. pipe line and each discharge is equippedwith a gate valve. This 12-in. pipe extends outside of thebuilding, and is firmly anchored to the barge. At theedge of the barge is a 12-in. Barco joint, then a Fig. 1—Pumping Plant of James O. Heyworth on Contract No. 11. Calumet Sag Channel. must be pumped out while the work is being this purpose the floating pumping plant shown inFig. 1 is used. This plant consists of a barge about 16ft. wide by 20 ft. long, having mounted on it two , type DSMD, horizontal, single stage, doublesuction centrifugal pumps, each designed to deliver 2,000gal. per minute against 50 ft. total head, and each drivenby a 35 , 3-phase, 60-cycle, 440-volt, General Electric, squirrel cage motor of 865 full load speed.
