Each follicle of a patch possesses a j^^ffacthj closed, thickand tolerably stroug coat of indistinctly fibrillated connectivetissue, with interspersed nuclei; within this are the contents, which are soft and greyish, (never milk-white). Theybecome slowly diffused through water and consist of a littlefluid, with innumerable nuclei and round cells of 0004—OOOS, which, when recent, appear quite homogeneous and ofa dull grey colour, but are first cleared up and ultimately des-troyed by the action of water and of acetic acid, the nuclei at thesame time becoming granular and very distinct. Among theseelements, which here and there also contain fatty granules, and Fig. which, as the comparison of their various forms shows, areconstantly undergoing progressive and retrogressive develop- Fig. 215. After an injection by Frei. 104 SPECIAL HISTOLOGY. mentj Frei and Ernst have demonstrated the existence ofnumerous, but very fine blood-vessels of 00015—0*004,which are connected with a rich vascular network surroundingthe follicle, and may be readily recognised in the contents ofthe follicles of animals (Pig, e. g.), if they be quite fresh, andhave been extracted with care. Little is known of the lymphatics of Peyers patches. Thismuch is certain^ however, that the number oflacteals which maybe traced during digestion from the Peyerian patches, is greaterthan that in other parts of the intestine, although their villi arefewer and less developed ; on the other hand, we know nothingof the internal relations of these
