In 1776 he was appointedGovernor of the city of Puebla. His successor wasappointed by a royal order of 1783; and in 1784 theViceroy reported to the Minister of War in Spainthat he had advanced to Colonel Portola twelve pay-ments of his salary to cover the expenses of his re-turn to Spain.
