Induction launcher, early 20th-century artwork. Metal rings are being launched upwards from an electromagnetic coil using a high-voltage alternating current. This classic experiment was devised in 1887 by US engineer Elihu Thomson (1853-1937). When the electric current is switched on (switch at lower right), current flows through the coil, magnetising the iron core. This repels the metal rings, which jump upwards in the air.
