storm named Wiebke in Bavaria damaged forest Germany Europe. Photo by Willy Matheisl
Willy Matheisl (WIEBKE) European windstorms are assigned names by the Meteorology Institute at the Free University of Berlin. In even-numbered years, male names are assigned to anticyclones and female names are assigned to cyclones; this swaps in odd-numbered years. Until 2002, name lists were drawn up by the Institute and rotated every two years, with notable cyclones (windstorms, snowstorms or floods) and anticyclones (heatwaves, droughts, freezes) retired. Since 2002 however, the public may purchase naming rights of cyclones and anticyclones. Conseqently, new lists are drawn up each year. Although approximately 150 low pressure areas are named in Europe every year, only a few reach windstorm strength. See external link for name lists and active systems.
