Distant view of Portes Castle, Portes in the Cevennes region of France.
Distant view of Portes castle. The castle was built in the 11th centuary to guard the ancient Regordane routeway through central France to the Mediterranean. It was used by pilgrims and connected Orleans to St Gilles. The castle is in an area rich in coal and previous mining activity beneath the castle has caused damage and subsidence to the structure. Volunteers are in the process of restoring the castle. The castle is clearly visible from many locations throughout the region giving testimony to the effectiveness of its siting.
