Thesacrifice of human life will be enormousand cannot be controlled while the greatend is being achieved. We stand behindthose boys over there who are fightingto perpetuate the glorious principles laiddown in our Constitution and are fur-nishing the nucleus for a victorious andlasting peace for the world. While thisis being done we are willingly abstainingfrom certain foodstuffs on certain days ofthe week, living within certain allowances. on other necessities andsupporting by contributionsevery laudable cause tend-ing toward the assistanceand relief of those whooccupy the trenches. I do not believe thatthere is a railroad man heretoday who would not willingly andpromptly offer his service, if, by so doing,he knew that his personal action wouldlessen the casualties and maintain theman-power on which this nation dependsin this war. In his character as a rail-road man his devotion to duty singles himout where he stands above every crafts-man on the face of the earth. In hischosen occupation he willingly assumessuch risks and endures such hardships asnone but a soldier knows. Faithful tohis trust he forgets self that the preciouslives may have his protection in theirjourney over his railroad. Constantlyvigilant with years of training and ap-parently unmindful of physical and men-tal hardships, he exhibits a spirit ofdetermination, fortitude and obediencethat ranks him among the her
