The Puig de Maria, with storm clouds gathering, overlooks the town of Pollença in the north of the island of Mallorca. (Puig, originally a Catalan word, means hill or mountain). The Puig de Maria is 340 metres high and was originally built in the fourteenth century - started in 1348. It was build to pleade for protection against the Black Death epidemic that swept across Europe and arrived in that year. It eventually killed 20% of the island's population. It had had a varied history, becoming a monantary, closed and abandoned, re-opened added to and refurbished! It currently welcomes visitors and over-night guests walking the GR221, the long distance path. It also makes a great 90 minute or so hike up to the top from the town below. From the summit there are excellent views over Pollença and the Peninsula de Formentor.
