Close-up view of a clothing fastener. It consists a sheet of opposing nylon hooks (top) and partial loops (bottom). The hooks and loops are readily attached to each other, but can be pulled apart with sufficient force. This design was invented in the 1940s by the Swiss electrical engineer George de Mestral, who was inspired by the burrs produced by some plants as a method of seed dispersal.
