Once Finow, the King of Tonga,was told of a whale which had been strandedon a little island inhabited only by a manand his wife. When Finow reached theplace he found that the teeth had been re-moved, and ordered the man and womaninto custody on the charge of stealing denied that they had more than twoteeth, which they gave up, whereupon theman was immediately killed with a club, andthe woman threatened with a similar fear of this threat she produced twomore teeth which she had hidden, but, re-fusing to acknowledge that she knew of anyothers, met with the same fate as her hus-band.
