This neighborhood of Manhattan , named originally populated by large numbers of Italian immigrants state. Formerly the neighborhood streets included Elizabeth, Mott and Mulberry north of Canal Street and the surrounding area. As Italian-Americans left Manhattan by other communes and the suburbs to the mid-twentieth century, the neighborhood recognizable as " Little Italy" gradually dwindled , and large parts of the district were absorbed by Chinatown . The northern part of Little Italy , near Houston Street , also ceased to be recognizably Italian, and eventually became the neighborhood known as NoLIta , an abbreviation of "North of Little Italy" . Currently the only place that still can be recognized as " Little Italy" is the section of Mulberry Street between Broome and Canal, which is full of Italian restaurants whose customers are mostly tourists. The " Feast of San Gennaro " is very typical of Little Italy . It takes place every September along Mulberry Street between Houston and Canal and lasts 11 days.
