Gardens of the Palazzo Pfanner in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy
Lucca, in the central Italian region of Tuscany, is a secret gem. A town still encircled by its wall. A small circular piazza with entrances at the four points of the compass stands on the site of the town’s Roman amphitheatre. The beautiful church of San Frediano, founded by an Irish saint. The facade of the church is decorated with a lavish thirteenth century mosaic; the interior houses a richly carved baptismal font as well as a shrine to Lucca's saint, Santa Zita. Located over the old Roman forum, and named for it, is San Michele in Foro. To be found in Piazza San Michele, the exterior is wonderfully ornate facade. Inside is panel with Four Saints by Filippino Lippi. On the summit, flanked by two other angels, is the 4 m-tall statue of St. Michael the Archangel. Lucca's ‘ordinary' market is held along Via dei Bacchettoni every Wednesday and Saturday morning. Lucca Cathedral - Duomo di San Martino The impressive facade is a triumph of sculpture, carving and inlay work. Home to the exquisite tomb of Ilaria del Carreto as well as Lucca's most famous relic, the Volto Santo. Casa di Puccini The statue of Lucca’s favourite son, Puccini, relaxing with a cigarette sits in the piazza near the house where Giacomo Puccini was born in 1858. Now a small museum with portraits, scores, sketches and the Steinway piano at which Lucca's most famous son composed Turandot. Palazzo Pfanner is a palace and gardens in Lucca, now converted into a museum The palazzo dates to 1667, and is notable mainly for its fine garden, attributed to Filippo Juvarra (1678-1736), and an interesting external stairway with loggia
