Other PKC activators enhance transmission If kinase C is involved in transmission at the squid syn- apse, then other PKC activators should produce changes in transmission similar to those produced by DPBA. The phorbol ester, tetradecanoyl phorbol-acetate (TPA), a compound used to activate PKC in a variety of experi- mental systems (Castagna eta/., 1982; Publicover, 1985; 1986;Shapira*Yfl/., 1987), was also capa- ble of enhancing synaptic transmission (Fig. 5A).
