The Pilgrim Fathers’ departure in July 1620 from Delfshaven in the Netherlands. Borderless crop of monochrome version antique engraving by T. Bauer, after a fresco by Charles West Cope (1811 - 1890). This engraving was first published in 1878 by Blackie & Son in ‘Pictures and Royal Portraits Illustrative of English and Scottish History’. Delfshaven, formerly the port of of Delft, is now a borough of Rotterdam on the right bank of the River Nieuwe Maas. The Pilgrim Fathers were members of an English separatist church sect of Puritans who, 11 years earlier, had fled religious persecution in England to become exiles at Leiden in the Netherlands. They left Delfshaven in a small ship, the ‘Speedwell’, to rendezvous with another, larger vessel, the ‘Mayflower’. When it transpired that only the ‘Mayflower’ would be suitable for a transatlantic voyage, the Pilgrims set sail from Plymouth, Devon, England, in that ship, landing in New England 102 days later. Charles West Cope was a painter of genre and history scenes, responsible for several artworks in the House of Lords, the Upper House of Parliament at Westminster, London. This engraving was based on a fresco by Cope displayed, according to the engraving’s inscription “in the New Palace of Westminster”.
