This involvedsome serious difficulty due to the great size of the gen-erator leads and generator circuit breakers, but theseobjections were considered easier to overcome, underthe circumstances, than the local difficulties with hightension. Three sets of single-phase raising transformers for13,200 volts with a capacity of 6000 kva per bank werepurchased as an initial equipment. These have dividedsecondary coils and sub-voltage taps so that one bankmay be used to supply the 6000-volt distribution as 922 ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL [Vol. XLV, No. 20. HAVANA POWER PLANT—VIEW IN BASEMENT SHOWINGTWIN CONDENSER long as that continues in service. The main generatorsare provided with automatic oil circuit breakers havingpositive time-element and reverse-energy trips, de-signed especially for the protection of the lead busbarsand station wires, because the large current in case ofa short-circuit could do very serious damage. A fourth generating unit of the same capacity as thefirst three can be installed in the present building withonly relatively slight expense for modifications in thepiping system, and additions of corresponding sectionsto the busbar and switch structure and the controlswitchboard. Further extensions with similar or largergenerating units can be made at either end of thepresent building, and these can be completed ready foruse before removing the present end walls withoutinterfering with regular operation in any way.
