Brown received his doctorate in nuclear chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University, USA, in 1941. Brown worked on the Manhattan Project, the World War II American atomic bomb project, helping to isolate plutonium, a radioactive element used in the first atomic bombs. He then became an outspoken opponent of nuclear weapons. He also worked on meteorites and planetary structure.
