Marine Corps Guirand of Platoon 4023, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, practices martial arts as part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program April 23, 2018, on Parris Island, The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program is designed to increase the warfighting capabilities of recruits, like Guirand, 18, from Silver Spring, Md., and build self-confidence and esprit de corps. Papa Company is scheduled to graduate June 29, 2018. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 12 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
