Preliminary drawing by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) for the head of St Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary. This study, made between 1510 and 1515 was for the oil painting The Virgin and Child with St Anne which is now in the Louvre, Paris. It was painted intermittently by Leonardo between 1500 and his death in 1519. The tender glance of a mother is beautifully depicted.
