Of course, all savage and heathen peopledo very strange things in connection with theirreligion and their laws, yet, however odd andridiculous some of these may seem to us, the peo- ple themselves believe them right and proper, be-cause they are so taught by their priests and some African tribes have fantastic andabsurd customs in which it would seem that they. MUMBO JUMBO SETTING OUT UPON HIS SEARCH. The Riddle- could not have any faith whatever ; still, they reallyattach a great deal of importance to them. Among these are the trials by Mumbo Jumbo, acharacter met with in many villages on the westcoast of Africa. Mumbo Jumbo is nothing at allbut a man on short stilts, with a sort of cloakwrapped about him, and a great false head fastenedabove his own head. All this, of course, makes FOR VERY LITTLE FOLK. 487 him look very tall, and a pair of wooden arms,ivhich stick out below his big head, help to givehim the appearance of a man about twice as big asanybody else.
