Book on the Great Nobi Earthquake, title page of the second edition (1893). This powerful earthquake took place on 28 October 1891, in Japan, killing over 7000 people. It was one of the first major disasters to be recorded by photography, with this book containing photographs of the earthquake damage. The authors, working in Japan at the time, were John Milne (1850-1913), a British geologist and mining engineer, and William Kinnimond Burton (1856-1899), a British sanitation engineer and photographer. The photography was by the Japanese photography pioneer Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929).
