Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring (1755-1830), Polish- German anatomist. Von Soemmerring conducted dissections of black and European people for comparative studies. He also was the first to describe the disease achondroplasia, a condition in which the arms and legs do not grow to their normal lengths. His anatomical work also led to a new species of gazelle (Gazella soemmerringi) being named after him.
