A horse drawing a boat from Llangollen Wharf up the Dee valley towards Llantysilio
The horsedrawn boats at Llangollen have no engine. They travel along the section of the canal leading to the Chain Bridge Hotel and the Horseshoe Falls which is too shallow for narrowboats. Narrowboats therefore have to turn round, wind, in the basin next to Llangollen Wharf. The Horseshoe Falls on the river Dee supplies the water for the Llangollen canal and then, in turn, for the drinking water supply of Crewe and Nantwich in Cheshire.
