Emperor Augustus Bronze, calcite, glass and plaster (27-25BC) Rome’s first emperor (63BC - AD14) ruled over at least 60 million people, but barely 20% were Roman citizens. This head from a larger-than-life statue was erected in Claudius Terentianus’s homeland, Egypt, newly-conquered since 30BC. Later torn down and buried beyond the imperial frontier.
