Ornamental rock surface. Patterns on a surface of a cut and polished piece of Paesina rock. This is a limestone unique to Tuscany, Italy. The brown colours are oxides of manganese and iron deposited by water as it seeped through cracks in the rock. The cracks formed as the sedimentary rock deformed and compacted under pressure. Limestone is mainly carbonate minerals from the remains of living organisms. The polished stones are used as ornaments prized for the beauty of their patterns.
