The Organ of the, Cathedral, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. The pipe organ of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is thought to be the largest, most complex, and resonant in Spain. Created in the seventeenth century, the instrument is regarded as one of the jewels of Spanish baroque hammer organ building. The pipes are made of solid walnut and arranged in several large halls. The wind supply is provided by a complex system of wind chests formed of four-piston bellows driven by two large water turbines. The organ incorporates several traditional and original elements, together with beautiful pieces of sculpture and decoration, to offer a unique beauty and atmosphere. The organ is played two times a week during the Cathedral Mass, and concerts are held on many Fridays and Saturdays, with alternating international artists.
