Low tide view looking across Godrevy beach at low tide. Wind surfers are enjoying the wind and Atlantic waves. Behind is the famous Godrevy island with its lighthouse. set in an enclosed stone wall. The area is owned and maintained by the National Trust. There have been many shipwrecks off the 'Stones' a dangerous reef which extends outwards towards Saint Ives. It was not until 1800 that an obligation to bury drowned sailors and passengers so many corpses were just left in the surrounding sand dunes. In 1854 an iron screw steamer called the 'Nile' was wrecked here with no survivors. Following this incident, Trinity house was put under pressure from both the public and merchants and in 1859 the light house was completed.
