One more of the "trademarks" of Mykonos is this beautiful byzantine church, Panagia Paraportiani. It is one of the oldest in the island. It is also one of the most "famous" churches in the Aegean and certainly the most famous of Mykonos. "Paraportiani" means "by the door" and it took its name from a nearby door of the old and now almost "dissapeared" castle. Many people think that the building is only one church, while Panagia Paraportiani is only a small church on the "1st floor" where the dome is and there are two diferent churches on ground level all of them "stuck" together. Two more churches in a distance of few meters create a magnificent "neighborhood" of churches. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of popular architecture of the Aegean and it amazes the visitor with its lines and curves and its "blinding" white colour. It sure amazed me and I kept returning there, diferent hours of the day, trying diferent angles, compositions and exposures. I came up with around 70 pictures, in colour and b&w. I was lucky enough to find the "owner" of the church (in this case "owner" is the person resposible for keeping the church in good "shape" and most important "white") Mrs. Francesca, who gave me the keys and I also saw the beautiful tiny interior.
