In The Farm Annual for 1896, on page 22, we printed the following notice:— (« I^f PPk^I PV ^\A/FPT^ " Under this name is known a New Watermelon which *VL,L#vrVL,L, 1 ? ? * has become celebrated already in Alabama. Mr. W. A. Kleckley, the originator, wanted us to introduce it this year and furnished excellent testimony as to its value. We told him, however, that we must stick to our rule " to prove all things" before their introduction. Therefore we purchased two hundred pounds of the seed to distribute gratis for' trial among our customers,—then if the verdict is favorable we shall introduce the KLECKLEY SWEETS as a New Watermelon in 1897. The reports received from every section, as well as our own trials, prove that the " KLECKLEY SWEETS" are the sweetest-flavored watermelons in cultivation. Of oblong shape, dark-green skin, the bright-red flesh is always solid, and of the most luscious flavor imaginable. The only fault that we discovered is that the rind is too tender for the melons to ship well to distant markets, but for the home garden and local markets no other melon can equal the KLECKLEY SWEETS. The above engraving from a photograph is printed on each package of seed. We only wish we had space to publish, half the letters received in praise of the " KLECKLEY ; The highest testimony we could give, however, is that of the well-known New Jersey melon grower, George R. Pedrick, originator of the Pedrick Perfected Corn, described on page 86 of The Farm Annual.
