Care and education of crippled children in the United States . nt appropriations, but it will doubtless serve a beneficentpurpose for the children of the rural communities as soon as thelegislature shall provide adequate means. We have no hesitation in advocating the creation of a statehospital for crippled children in every state in the Union. In noother way can the multitudes of crippled children outside of thelarge cities be reached. The need of such hospitals is greatest, however, in those states where there are few, if any, competentorthopedic surgeons. Such surgeons are found only in the largecities because smaller cities do not have a sufficient number ofcases to afford a livelihood to competent men. Our study shows that there are no institutions for crippledchildren west of Omaha except in Seattle, and none south of Balti-more. Some orthopedic work is done in general hospitals of theSouth and West, in cities like Charleston, Atlanta, New Orleans,Galveston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, but that work leavesthe rural districts untouched. 8.
