Captain William Finch of the White Star liner ARABIC sunk Aug 19th of August 1915 off Kinsale, Ireland (32 lives lost) when torpedoed by the U-24 German u-boat submarine. The Arabic was built by Harland and Wolff ( launched 18 December 1902) and was originally intended to be Minnewaska, one of four ships ordered from Harland and Wolff, Belfast for the Atlantic Transport Line. Finch was a hero who went down with his ship but survived to swim for about for f40 minutes rescuing other passenger including a woman and her infant who he got them into a life raft. He was awarded the OBE
